Victor Underwood, aged 47 years, residing at 416 Van Buren Street, South, died at Mercy Hospital at 5:05 this morning, as a result of injuries received early Thursday afternoon when he was run over by a freight car in the Hampton yards at the Pere Marquette Railroad Co. Mr. Underwood, a car inspector, has been employed by the Pere Marquette for about 10 years, formerly being a repair man, but recently being appointed to a car inspector's job, it is said. He was inspecting a car, according to the report given The Times Tribune, and was in the act of uncoupling it, when the train backed up, throwing him to the rails and under the car in such a manner that his right leg was badly mangled. Railroad officials refused to give out any information regarding the accident today. Mr. Underwood was rushed to Mercy Hospital following the accident, where he was attended by Dr F. Baird. The leg was amputated below the knee last night, but he failed to recover from the shock and the loss of blood. Mr. Underwood was born in Portsmouth township, November 7, 1877, and had always resided in Bay County. Besides his wife he is survived by four children-- Henry, Alma, Leona and Loretta; his mother, Mrs. Clarissa Underwood, of this city, and one brother, Melvin Underwood also of Bay City. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home of Mrs. Underwood's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wordelmann, 714 Fourteenth street, and at 2:30 from Immanuel Lutheran church.
