Victoria Gillies was born on Sept. 7, 1915, to Carl and Clara (Sivertson) Krogen in Dalen Township at her family’s farm just north of Carbury. She moved with her mother and siblings three years later to the Turtle Mountains after her father died from one of the worst pandemics the world has ever witnessed, the 1918 Spanish Influenza, which killed over 30 million people worldwide. Victoria, who refused to leave her father’s side while he was sick, also caught the 1918 Flu and spent several weeks at St. Andrew’s Hospital in Bottineau near death, but survived the epidemic. In the Turtle Mountains, Victoria lived on a farmstead just east of Lake Metigoshe and near her mother’s parents. She attended the one-room Loon Lake school house in Roland Township, worked on the family’s farm, attended Salem Church and enjoyed riding horses throughout the hills of the local area. She moved to Bottineau in the 1930s and attended Bottineau High School while assisting Monte and Anne (Krogen) Woods with their family. In 1936, she married Alexander Gillies and went on to become a surgical technician at St. Andrew’s Hospital in Bottineau where she was employed until she retired at around the age of 72. During her life in Bottineau, Victoria was known for her deep devotion to God and church, caring for her family, assisting others in the community, gardening, walking and her great joy in baking Norwegian sugar cookies and donuts. Victoria was also known for her fashion sense, adventurous side and her eagerness to learn; and, did so by traveling extensively, participating in many activities and events, along with her willingness to try anything once, and, all with a smile. What Victoria was best known for was her heart and humanitarian ways. She was an advocate to all cultures and nationalities, fought for those in poverty and compassionate to those who were ill. She opened her doors to anyone who needed a home and was charitable to all individuals. Victoria passed away on Sept. 8, 2016, one day following her 101st birthday at the Good Samaritan Society of Bottineau with family and friends at her bedside. Victoria is survived by her daughters Janet Wagar and JoAnn (Peter) Kallas; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Gillies, parents Carl and Clara Krogen, step-father Ole Anderson, son-in-law Paul Wagar, her siblings Lloyd (Edith) Krogen, Margaret (Bennie) Skarphol, Clarice (Selmer) Wall, Stella (Ray) Sjule and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
