ViEtta Lucy Mattes was born on May 21, 1919 to John Mattes and Clara (Ridderman*) Mattes on a farm near Carroll, Iowa. She was one of six children, all of whom were reared on the family farm. She attended Peter and Paul's Elementary School in Carroll and graduated from eighth grade. She lived at home until enrolling at Capital Beauty School in Omaha. ViEtta Lucy Mattes was born on May 21, 1919 to John Mattes and Clara (Ridderman*) Mattes on a farm near Carroll, Iowa. She was one of six children, all of whom were reared on the family farm. She attended Peter and Paul's Elementary School in Carroll and graduated from eighth grade. She lived at home until enrolling at Capital Beauty School in Omaha. After graduation, she practiced her profession at Dee's Beauty Shop in Omaha until her marriage. In 1946, ViEtta married John Frank Fischer of Templeton, Iowa. Although they later divorced, they had two daughters. In 1956, ViEtta moved to what would be her last residence in Des Moines. She spent the rest of her life there until a few days before her death. As a profession, ViEtta provided day-care in her home for many, many years and cared for hundreds of children. Years later, she would still have connections to many of the families for which she provided child-care. ViEtta was an avid vegetable gardener and liked to can vegetables, bake breads and pies, and make giant batches of holiday candies each year. She had a raspberry patch and thoroughly enjoyed harvesting and eating them as well as giving many away. She liked spending time with family and with her McDonald's Coffee group. She avidly followed the Chicago Cubs and The Young and the Restless on TV. She always carefully read the Des Moines and Carroll newspapers and always found the smallest item about someone she knew. She always loved an opportunity to go to the casino. She also enjoyed playing cards and many other games and was always up for a joke. She was a long-time member of Basilica of St. John and an Honorary Member of The Altar and Rosary Society. She is survived by her two daughters, Sandra (Roger) Ruppert of Santa Ana, CA and Videlle (Maurice) Wadle of Coralville; three grandchildren, Michael Hall, Kelly Hinz, and Sam Ruppert; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. ViEtta was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings. ViEtta lived 95 years, 2 months and 29 days.
