Vila Mae (Monroe) Schultz Reinhardt was born March 27, 1923, the oldest child of Thomas and Ella (Schroeder) Monroe, on a farm in Bloomfield Township of Winneshiek County, near Castalia. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith and was confirmed Sept. 20, 1936, by the Rev. William Striepe at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. Vila Mae attended the Castalia School. On Sept. 24, 1941, she was married to Ralph Charles Schultz in the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. To this union a daughter, Linda, was born. Vila Mae helped her husband on the farm. She became a certified nursing assistant in 1964 and was employed at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. Ralph died in 1972. Vila Mae opened a small grocery store in Castalia. On Nov. 10, 1978, she was married to Harvey Reinhardt at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville by the Revs. David Nelson and Duane Schroeder. The couple made their home in Castalia. In 1994, Vila Mae and Harvey were the grand marshals of the Castalia Tractor Days. They enjoyed traveling, visiting almost every state and taking trips overseas. Vila Mae was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia and had served as president of the Women of the ELCA. She also had received her age 75 membership pin. She had been a resident at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville since 1997. Survivors include her daughter, Linda Schultz and Gene Stubberud of Castalia; a stepdaughter, Janice Folstad of Castalia; two brothers, Merle and Juanita Monroe, and Lloyd and Betty Monroe, all of Castalia; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Vila Mae was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Ralph Schultz and Harvey Reinhardt.
