His given name was actually HENRY VINCENT GLASS, which he used as a young man and probably used it when he enlisted to fight in the Revolution. This was according to his own affadvit, filed when he attempted to claim a military pension for his wartime service. He said he used "Henry" or "Henry Vincent" as his name when he was young, and used "Vincent" as he grew older. In fact, by 1832 it had been so long since he had used "Henry" or "Henry Vincent" that he forgot to mention it had been his name when he enlisted in 1775. In 1833 he attempted to set the record straight: he was "Henry" or "Henry Vincent" as a youth, but he changed it to "Vincent" after the war. He gives no reason, but we can surmise that he simply liked his middle name better than his first, as so many people do even today. I used "VINCENT" in this memorial page because it was the name by which he went for the majority of his life, and it is the name on his gravestone AND the plaque placed by an organizatio that honors war veterans... it was probably the Sons of the American Revolution, although they do not say so on the plaque. His wife was born in 1755 in Virginia: Mary Jones (1755-1830; middle name possibly Susannah or Susanna). She was the daughter of Aaron Jones (1731-1804) and Sarah Stroud (1733-1803). [Source: Virginia Revolutionary War Pension Applicants, Volume 44, page 38, 1832. Certificate 13170 was issued 24 May 1833.] According to Find A Grave contributor Ann Jaber, she was the sister of Bailey Jones, making Bailey and Vincent brothers in law... And making for an interesting branch on the family tree. According to recently-placed memorial plaque (as of 5 July 2015) Vincent served in the 14th Virginia Regiment, though he himself seems to have never recalled doing so. At least he could never remember its numerical designation. Henry married Mary between 1782 and 1787 in Culpeper County Virginia - probably in the part of the county that is now Rappahannock County, where they resided after the Revolution. In several depositions filed with the U.S. Pension department, Glass said in his younger days he went by the name “Henry Vincent Glass,” but later went simply by “Vincent Glass”. Obviously, this is something plenty of people still do today when they are less than enamored of their first name. But the practice can play havoc with genealogical research... almost as much as when people name their kids after themselves (and their grandfathers and grandmothers, thus perpetuating the same name for several generations). But in this case, his middle name makes him far easier to trace than might otherwise have been possible... but it also may have been at least partially responsible for his never [in his lifetime] receiving the recognition and the pension deserved. According to his depositions, here is the story of his Revolutionary War experience: On November 8, 1832, he stated that he was living in Culpeper County (probably part of what is now Rappahannock County), Virginia, when the American Revolution began. He signed up for service at Fauquier Court House (modern Warrenton) in 1775 with Samuel Blackwell, a recruiting officer. It’s unclear whether or not these were the Culpeper Minute Men, part of the Virginia Militia for which Patrick Henry had appealed in his “Liberty or Death” speech before the Virginia Assembly, when it met in March 1775 at Saint John’s Church in Richmond. He stated he went into service under Captain John Gillison, Lt. Thomas Baily and Ensign John Saunders, in the 10th regiment. He was soon transferred to the 7th regiment of the Virginia Line, serving under Col. John Gibbon and Major Welch. In his 8 Nov 1832 statement, he remembered marching through Fauquier County, Alexandria and Georgetown, and joined up with the main army outside Philadelphia. He took part in the battles of Trenton [before which Washington’s army made its famous nighttime crossing of the Delaware River], White Plains, Schuylkill, Brandywine and Germantown, after which he ‘wintered’ at Valley Forge. [Chronologically his story is exactly correct.] Later (26 September 1833) he said he may have been mistaken; that he may have been initially assigned to the 3rd or 4th regiment, not the 10th. He remembered one of the drummers was Robert Wheaton, while a messmate was Benjamin Kendrick of Culpeper County. He left service in 1778. [After the experience at Valley Forge, no one could seriously blame him, although depending upon when he actually left the ranks, he may have missed out on the subsequent victory at Monmouth. But who could say he would have survived that battle?] He served three years and received his discharge papers. In the 26 Sept 1833 statement, he claimed his discharge papers were burned when his house caught fire and burned, “shortly after the war” - which ended in 1781 on the battlefields, but it wasn’t until 1783 that the treaty was signed. (So “shortly after the war” could be two different time periods. Bottom line: the date of this house fire is unknown.) However, the house had been “about 2 miles from Gaines’ Cross-Roads,” Virginia (today’s Ben Venue, between Massie's Corner and Amissville on rte. 211). That still leaves its exact location open to speculation, of course, since it places it anywhere within a circle roughly four miles in diameter, with its center at Ben Venue (again, the old Gaines’ Cross Roads). The modern roads pretty well follow the old ones, but as to how far off the road his house stood is anyone’s guess. If the home had a foundation, it’s possible the foundation is still there, but buried, obscured by trees, overgrowth or other vegetation, or only visible from the air. On September 26 1833, he stated he had lived in these following locations during his lifetime... on his way to Ohio: Unknown: 1746-1751 (4-5 years); Culpeper County, Virginia, from 1751-1813 (62 years, almost certainly in that portion of old Culpeper Co. that is now Rappahannock Co.); Harrison County, Virginia (today in W.Va.), 1813-1815 (2 years); Wood County, Virginia (now in W.Va.), 1815-1821 (6 years); Washington County, Ohio 1821-1828 (7 years); and in Belmont County, Ohio from 1828 until his death in 1834 (6-7 years). That he was able to make these last moves, considering his age (75 for the move to Washington Co, and 82 on the move to Belmont County), is remarkable. As to where he lived his first years (1746-1751), there is as yet no reliable indication. He was 49 when his son Aaron was born in 1795. There is also a record of a James Glass born the same year; at this point it's uncertain if James was a twin of Aaron, or if one of their birthdates is incorrect, or if James was actually someone else's son. Vincent Glass and his friend Bailey Jones - who was also a relative by virtue of the marriages of four children - were buried close to each other in what became the Stillwater Baptist Church Cemetery at Rock Hill in Flushing Township, Belmont County, Ohio. In fact, their gravestones are side by side, but there is a space between them; perhaps their wives are buried there, as no gravestones exist for either of them. There are so many Glasses and Joneses who migrated from old Clupeper County, Virginia, to Belmont County, Ohio, in the early 19th century that it is difficult to keep them straight... especially since so many of them shared first names. Grave marker: "Vincent Glass, U.S. soldier, Revolutionary War." As mentioned above, a bronze plaque added recently (as of 5 July 2015) says he served in the 14th Virginia Regiment. His sons are buried nearby: "Aaron Glass, U.S. Soldier, War of 1812," and "John Glass, U.S. Soldier, War of 1812." Research is still being conducted (isn't it always?)to try to get as many details as possible.
