Description	:	MITCHELL - Vincent Salvador Massina Jr., 84, went home to be with his Lord Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at the Mitchell Care Center. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 15, at the Mitchell Federated Church, with Dr. Charles H. Richardson officiating. A private family inurnment will precede the service. Vince, as he was known to us, was born Dec. 15, 1923, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Vincent and Lena (Caito) Massina. He attended public school in Waterloo, and with the advent of WW II, he joined the United States Marine Corps. Vince served his country faithfully as a Marine. He was wounded in combat while fighting in the Pacific Theatre and subsequently was awarded the Purple Heart for extraordinary bravery. Following the war, Vince returned home to Waterloo, where he served as a fireman and as a street commissioner. He was married and divorced. In 1979, he married Norma (Hilyard) Graber and they resided in Waterloo until their retirement. Following their retirement, they moved to their new home in Mitchell. Vince was a member of the Federated Church; he loved taking trips with Norma, and he enjoyed returning for reunions of his WWII marine buddies. Norma's death from cancer in 2005 was a severe blow to Vince but yet he persevered by staying active in his Church and being with friends. Survivors include Norma's sons, Stephen and Thomas; sisters, Helen Bowen of California and Rosemary Bragonier of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Ralph (Glenda) Hilyard of Mitchell; sisters-in-law, Jeanette (Tom) Dawson of Stow, Mass., and Grace Massina of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Vince in death were his parents; his wife, Norma; sisters, Grace Holbrook and Frances Appleby; and brothers, Joseph and Frank Massina.
