"AN OLD SETTLER GONE - At 10 pm Saturday, June 23, 1894, that esteemed citizen and pioneer, Mr. Vincent Shelly, completed his life's work and passed to eternal rest. Mr. Shelly was born in North Carolina, April 1, 1818; when he was ten years old his parents emigrated to Indiana. In 1842 he came to Iowa, settling near Burlington, but for many years had resided in Palo Alto Twp., this county, which place was his home at the time of his death. August 14, 1844, he was united in marriage to Malinda Ware. Of the ten children that blessed their union, seven are now living, all, except one, married and out of the home nest. Las fall he was severely injured by a kick from a horse, and although he had so far recovered as to be able to attend church a few times this spring, his injuries together with the infirmaries of old age, brought death's sudden summons. He had been a faithful member of the M. E. Church for 16 years and died fully realizing that the future was bright to him, and that the Lord was with him all the way. The funeral services were held at the Mt. Zion church, Sunday afternoon. Rev. D. Phillips conducted the obsequies, taking the first part of 2d verse of the 3rd chap. of Eec., as the foundation for a strong sermon, touching on the Christian worth of the deceased as an example to his fellowmen. The capacity of the church was wholly inadequate to accommodate those who had gathered to pay their respects to their deceased friend and neighbor."
