HORTIN - Thursday - November 23, 2006 Wenatchee - Vi Hortin passed away peacefully at home on the morning of November 21, 2006, after a brief battle with leukemia. Viola Belle Leyda was born the eldest of four children to Ed and Clara (Gustin) Leyda on September 20, 1920, in a tent house located in an orchard at Beebe, WA. Her family later moved to McNeil Canyon to live on land homesteaded by her grandparents. She first attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Beebe, later graduating from Chelan High School in 1938. She married Ernest B. Hortin at the family home in McNeil Canyon on December 24, 1939. Vi and Ernie lived in Chelan during the early years of their marriage and had four children during that time. Both worked many years in the apple industry. They later moved from town to ranch land they owned on Chelan Butte. As her children matured, Vi pursued additional schooling in accounting at Wenatchee Valley College. She worked as an accountant in the Chelan area for many years until retirement, after which she and Ernie indulged their love of travel by touring the country in their RV, making many new friends along the way. Golfing and square dancing were also passions, and many happy hours were spent on golf courses in Chelan and also in Yuma, AZ, where they spent winters for a number of years. After Ernie's passing, Vi moved to Wenatchee and continued her active life and love of golf with friends in Chelan and at Three Lakes Golf Course. She found love and companionship again and at the age of 79, she married a long time friend, Bill Beardsley. They had several happy years together before Bill's passing in 2004. Preceding Vi in death were her parents, Ed and Clara Leyda; her husbands, Ernie Hortin and Bill Beardsley; her son, Steve Hortin; and brother, Austin Leyda. Surviving her are her son, Doug (Sherri) Hortin of Edmonds; son, Dave (Jan) Hortin of Snohomish; daughter, Pam (Doyle) Cackler of East Wenatchee; grandchildren, Craig, Eric, Grant, Dede, Alex, Eliot, Andy and Tony Hortin, and Jeff and Brad Cackler; and great-grandchildren, Lillian Maitland and Clare Ballard. Vi was a bright light who greatly enriched the lives of all with whom she came into contact. We will miss her kindness, warm smile and the merry twinkle in her eyes. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2006, in Chelan at Lake Chelan United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Friday, November 24, 2006, from 1-8 p.m. at Precht Rose Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be made to Central Washington Hospital Home Care and Hospice, 903 Red Apple Road, Wenatchee. Services are under the direction of Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.
