Born May 26, 1922, on a farm near Arthur, Iowa, Viola Dorothy Skarin was the daughter of Einor E.T. and Ruby Viola (Petersen) Skarin. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Viola graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1939, then worked as a nanny in Rockford, Illinois, and Boston, Massachusetts. She worked at the Adam's Ranch near Odebolt as a cook and housekeeper. While working in Dr. T.J. Houlihan's office, Viola met her future husband. On December 12, 1943, she was united in marriage to Burdette Earl Witte at Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron, Iowa. The couple farmed near Schaller and Ida Grove. In 1969, they made their home in Ida Grove. Viola was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, being a Girl Scout leader and hosting day camp on the farm. From 1966-1998, she worked at Horn Memorial Hospital as a nurse's aide, LPN, ward clerk, secretary to the education director, and for Horn Video Productions. Viola loved the Lord with all her heart and soul. She was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, LWML, Sewing Circle, and Dorcas. She helped sew many quilts for Orphan Grain Train and Lutheran World Relief. She taught Sunday school and confirmation classes. Viola was also a member of the Morningside Care and Rehab Auxiliary. She helped tend the flower beds on the grounds and welcomed sharing her faith for 13 years, leading devotions every Saturday morning with the residents. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burdette; her parents; a grandchild, Tracy Ford; and a sister, Darleen Yorty. Survivors include four children and their spouses, Charles and Virginia Witte of Georgetown, TX, Nancy and Robert Ford of South Sioux City, NE, Sandra and Marcello Jones of Belize, Central America, and Beth and Kenneth Schramm of Odebolt; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Vernon and Rose Skarin of Woodbine; and many extended family members and friends.
