Obituary from "Ottumwa Courier," February 20, 1956: Mrs. Viola Truitt Dies At Age of 82 Mrs. Viola Evelene Gay Truitt, 82, died at 10:45 a.m. Sunday at the home of her niece, Mrs. William Rupe of 307 McKinley avenue. She was born November 9, 1873, in Mercer County, Mo., the daughter of Lewis R. and Nancy Power [sic] Gay. She was married August 27, 1913, to Henry Arthur Truitt who died July 28, 1927. Mrs. Truitt had lived in the Agency and Ottumwa communities for more than 50 years. She as a member of the First Baptist church, and Daughters of Union Veterans. She was a former matron of the American Home Finding association. Her survivors include a stepson and stepdaughter, Mrs. Claude Wright and Arthur W. Truitt, both of Ottumwa. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces of nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Jay funeral home in charge of the Rev. Charles Thunn, pastor of the First Baptist church. Burial will be in the Agency cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert Wright, Martin Rupe, Donald Howard, Clell Johnson, Bernard Jones and Edward Cain. Note: I believe that Viola's mother's maiden name was spelled Powers.
