Viola Ulmer was born May 27, 1913, in Hutchinson County near Menno, S.D., to Emanuel and Anna (Zeller) Ulmer. This is where she started school and then at 9 years of age the family moved to the Mina, S.D., area where she continued her education. She married Floyd “Shorty” Everette Cunningham on Nov. 28, 1935, at Mina. They adopted their daughter, Kay, in 1947. They made their home and farmed in the Mina area where they grew everything under the sun grain, cattle, turkey's, geese, ducks and chickens. In 1963 they sold the farm and moved to Rapid City, S.D. They then moved to Aberdeen, S.D., in 1965. Floyd died Jan. 28, 1981. Recently Viola was a resident of Manor Care Health Services in Aberdeen. She was a member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Ladies Aid and the church choir. She was also a member of the Extension Club and the Help One Another Club in her neighborhood. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, quilting, other handiwork, doing word searches, watching television, and eating. Survivors include one daughter: Kay (Archie) Clifford of Westport, S.D.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, and four sisters. Honorary casketbearers will be her nieces, nephews, and her many friends. Active casketbearers will be Bob Cunningham, Gary Cunningham, Rick Clifford, A.J. Clifford, Cody Clark, and Bill Dennert. Organist will be Susan Ellingson. Soloist will be Rev. Jais Tinglund. Ushers will be Josh Dennert and Casey Dennert. Published in the Aberdeen News on 11/22/2005.
