Description	:	Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” December 29, 1951: Mrs. Viola Hathaway, 77, who was secretary of the local social services bureau for many years, died at 10:00 a.m. today in Broadlawns-Polk County general hospital in Des Moines, where she had been a patient for 10 days. She was born in Richland October 6, 1874, but had lived most of her life in Ottumwa. She served as secretary of the social services bureau from 1921 until 1934. She was born in Richland October 6, 1874, but had lived most of her life in Ottumwa. She served as secretary of the social services bureau from 1921 until 1934. During this time she was also county overseer of the poor. She left Ottumwa in 1936 to make her home in Des Moines with her daughter Mrs. Glenn Rhoads. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Rhoads are two sons, John L. of West Des Moines and Lt H. Russell Hathaway now in Great Lakes, Ill. navy station , and seven grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Miss Elizabeth Lewman, Mrs. Molly Baum, and Mrs. Ada McCune, all of Ottumwa. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Lewman, preceded her in death as did one brother. Funeral services are planned for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Reece funeral home in charge of the Rev. A.M. Veltman of Grandview Baptist church in Des Moines. Burial will be in the McIntire cemetery south of town.
