Viola Gums was born July 23, 1925, in Medina, N.D., the daughter of Christ and Elizabeth (Heiser) Gums. She grew up in the Medina area, attended public school in Medina and graduated from Medina High School. She attended Jamestown College and Dakota Business College, Fargo N.D. She was employed at Montgomery Wards for a short time as a bookkeeper. She married Alfred Carlson on Dec. 23, 1951, in Jamestown. Viola Gums was born July 23, 1925, in Medina, N.D., the daughter of Christ and Elizabeth (Heiser) Gums. She grew up in the Medina area, attended public school in Medina and graduated from Medina High School. She attended Jamestown College and Dakota Business College, Fargo N.D. She was employed at Montgomery Wards for a short time as a bookkeeper. She married Alfred Carlson on Dec. 23, 1951, in Jamestown. They lived and farmed southeast of Jamestown until they retired in 1981. He died June 19, 1999. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Jamestown, Morning Circle at St. John's Lutheran Church, Homer Homemakers and a 4-H leader of Lads and Lassies 4-H Club. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles, playing Scrabble, fellowship with her friends at the Heritage Center and traveling, including visiting all 50 states. She is survived by a daughter, Karen (John) Berglund, South Haven, Minn., and two sisters, Leona Daede, Jamestown, and Arlene (Bernard) Kramer, Kensal, N.D. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and a sister. Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, St. John's Lutheran Church, Jamestown with the Rev. Doug Opp officiating. Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown. Prayer service: 7 p.m. Sunday, Eddy Funeral Chapel. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.
