MARTINViola Susan Bishop was born near Dayton, Mich., September 3, 1854. When she was four years old her parents moved to Clayton, Iowa and settled near Strawberry Point, at this time there were two older children in the family, Warren and Lena, here she grew to womanhood. When she was fifteen years of age her father died and she had to support herself and help her mother somewhat.She was married at Delhi, Iowa to Joseph C. Martin on May 4, 1872, and their married life has been for nearly 43 years a delightful companionship. Four children were born to them, two sons and two daughters all of whom survive her. Soon after their marriage they moved to Bradford, Iowa, and while there their oldest son Bert was born. They did not stay there long, but moved back to Strawberry Point, until thirty-seven years ago when they moved to the vicinity of Aurora, Iowa, which has been their home since. Mrs. Martin battled bravely against disease for some months during which time everything was done that her dear ones knew to bring about a cure, but on Tuesday afternoon, February 23rd at a little before six o'clock she quietly passed away from earth at the age of 60 years, 5 months and 20 days. She was a kind neighbor and friend, a loving and devoted wife and mother whose memory will long remain. The sympathy of the neighborhood goes out to the loved ones in their grief.She leaves to mourn besides her husband four children; Bert W., Edward L., and Mrs. Myrtle Schroeder of Aurora, Iowa, Mrs. Blanche Riggs of Castalia, Iowa and ten grandchildren. Also one sister survives, Mrs. Rose Evans of Manchester, Iowa.Mrs Martin was a Christian woman. She with her husband was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church on probation Feb. 22, 1891, was baptized July 5, 1891 and received into full connection September 13th of the same year all under the pastorate of the Rev. J. J. Kidder. This made a Christian experience of 24 years, during which she gave abundant evidence of her faith in Jesus Christ and it brings a sense of joy and hope to her loved ones in the midst of their grief.The funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Aurora, conducted by her pastor, Rev. S. C. Bretnall, on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 25 and the body was laid away in the Madison cemetery.Manchester Democrat - Manchester, Iowa - March 3, 1915
