Owens Coomer, 74, of Box 297, Kellogg, a lifelong resident of Jasper County, died of complications of surgery Friday evening, Sept. 15, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton. The Rev. Lyle Johnston, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Kellogg, will conduct services. Burial will be in Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg. Memorials to the Kellogg United Methodist Church or the Jasper County Retarded Citizens Association will be accepted. Survivors are a son Richard Harvey Coomer of Kellogg; a daughter Helen (Mrs. Ramon) Heckert of Urbandale; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother William "Bill" Owens of Newton; two sisters, Maye Howe of Newton and Grace (Mrs. Mel) Adams of Grinnell; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harvey "Jack" Coomer, April 19, 1981, a brother Ernie, a sister Martha Carpenter, and a sister Gladys in infancy. Mrs. Coomer, a member of the Kellogg United Methodist Church and Kellogg Garden Club, had been a machine operator at Midwest Manufacturing Co. prior to her retirement. The daughter of Charlie B. and Mata Elizabeth Dishman Owens, she was born Oct. 16, 1914 in Monticello, Ky., and was educated in Jasper County schools.
