She was born the ninth child of eleven siblings: Lonnie Howard, Charlie Howard, Quentin Howard, Gaynell Cumbie, Emily Tanner, Mary Alford, Sudie Mae Morris, Ann Cottingham, Sonny Howard, and Perry Howard. The Howard family was musically gifted using their talents for many churches, revivals, and religious events. Violet along with Sudie Mae, Ann, Perry, formed the beloved and successful Southern Gospel family singing group The Howard Quartet. Violet was the lead soprano singer who was known for a voice that could fill a service with worship and a beautiful and contagious smile that would brighten any room she entered. On June 30, 1952, at the young age of sixteen, she married the love of her life, Bobby Strong. Because her love for children and music, she worked and assisted with the music program for several years at the Earles Christian School. As the epitome of Southern charm, she worked with Merrell Norman Cosmetics teaching ladies the proper and beautiful skill of make-up. As a gifted seamstress, she worked many years with Oneita Industries. She is survived by: a son, Arthur D. “Art” Strong, Jr.; two step-grandchildren, Colt George and Levi George; two sisters, Mary Alford and Emily Tanner; a loved as her daughter, Fran C. McCrea; and many special nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by: her parents; her husband; eight siblings, Lonnie, Charlie, Quentin, Gaynell, Sudie Mae, Ann, Sonny, and Perry; and all of her brothers and sisters in-law. A Home Going Celebration will be 2:30PM, Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Piney Forest Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Kevin Brown and Rev. Frankie Tanner. Interment will follow in the Andrews Memorial Cemetery directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home. The Strong family will receive family and friends prior to the service from 1-2PM in the Family Life Center. Due to Covid-19, the family asks that everyone please practice social distancing and facemasks are requested. McKenzie Funeral Home is honored to serve the Howard-Strong family.
