A 2:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at Ray Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Zack Dease and The Reverend Doctor Steve Craver officiating. Young, 95, passed away Saturday, August 23, 2014, at The Brian Center in Eden. Interment will follow in Mayodan Moravian Graveyard. A Rockingham County native, Mrs. Young was born September 18, 1918, the daughter of William Herbert Kirkman and Lissie Atkins Kirkman. Mayodan was her home town where she lived a full and fruitful life serving the Lord, church, town and surrounding area. Mrs. Young graduated from Mayodan High School and Draughn’s Business College. She retired from the US Postal Service with over 30 years of service. She was a lifetime member of Mayodan Moravian Church where she served as organist for 40 years, The Board of Elders, and Sunday School Teacher and as a delegate to Synod of Moravian Church Southern Providence. For many years she the church Archivist. Mrs. Young enjoyed traveling and attending Moravian Music Festivals nationwide. In service to her church and community, Mrs. Young played the piano and organ in some capacity for over 65 years, playing for countless weddings and funerals. Her love of old pictures and interest in genealogy prompted her to become involved in various historical organizations. As a member of the Rockingham Historical Society she helped with the publishing of Rockingham County’s Heritage Book. She was also a contributor to the Stokes and Surry County’s Heritage Books. In 1996 she published a pictorial history to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Mayodan Moravian Church. September 18, 2005 was declared “Violet Young Day” by the Mayodan Town Council for her articles, pictures and sharing of information concerning the town. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Berkley O. Young; sister, Pansy K. Martin and brother, Donald H. Kirkman. Mrs. Young is survived by two children, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Source Citation: Ray Funeral Home
