Description	:	Violet M. Smith, 95, formerly of Obert and Hartington, Neb., died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Regency Square in South Sioux City. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington, with the Rev. Stewart Sell officiating. Burial will be in Obert Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Mrs. Smith was born July 7, 1908, in Obert, the daughter of Chris and Anna Mae (Matsen) Nielsen. She grew up in the Obert area and graduated from Newcastle (Neb.) High School in 1927. She married Kermit Peter Smith on Oct. 21, 1927, in Hartington. The couple farmed near Obert and Wynot, Neb., until 1956. They lived in Laurel, Neb., until 1958, when they moved to South Sioux City. She worked for J.C. Penney in Sioux City. From 1964 to 1979, she lived in Obert again before moving to Yankton, S.D. Mr. Smith died Sept. 1, 1980, in Hartington. She moved to Atkinson, Neb., in 1990 and moved to Hartington in 1997. She became a resident of Pine Lane Assisted Living in 1999 and had been a resident of Regency Square since 2002. She was an organist at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Obert and a former Sunday school teacher. She held many offices in the American Lutheran Church Women. She was a former member of Naomi Circle of the ALCW at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington. She was a former member and volunteer at the Atkinson Senior Citizens Center and also in Yankton. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Kermit N. and Donna Smith of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Kendall and Carol Smith of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-stepgrandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ruben, Louis, Nels and Walter Nielsen; and two sisters, Carrie Petersen and Naomi Rasmussen. Pallbearers will be Rick Heikes, Roger Heikes, Gary Rasmussen, Jack Moore, Ron Nielsen and Gene Olson. Source: Sioux City Journal
