Description	:	Violet May Rider was the daughter of Christopher Augustus ("August") Rider and Charlotte ("Lottie") Ann Fair. When Lottie abandoned the family ca 1915, the seven Rider children were scattered. Violet and her younger brother, August, were adopted by Carl Gottfried Nelson and Vida Belle (Williams) Nelson. Nelson married Donald Jay Hathaway, son of Jay Claude Hathaway and Amy Lenorah Thomas, on March 21, 1928, in Chehalis, Lewis County, Washington; the marriage ended in the mid-to-late 1940s. The couple had eight children, namely: Lanorah May (Hathaway) Shepard (1928-2001), William J. ("Bill") Hathaway (1930-2013), [living son], Ruth Evelyn Hathaway (1934-2009), Ruby Elaine (Hathaway) [Moeller] Symington (1936-1999), Mark Leroy Hathaway (1938-2006), and [living daughter]. One son, birth date unknown, died before 1977. Violet Hathaway married Alfred J. James, son of John Wesley James and Alice May Whitehorn, on February 24, 1958, in Missoula, Missoula County, Montana; they were married until his death on October 23, 1969. The couple had no children together. Born on Aug. 19, 1907, in Staples, Minn., she married Alfred James in Missoula in 1957 [sic-1958]. She made her home in Polson for a number of years, moving to Woods Bay in 1967. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Mrs. James was preceded in death by her husband in 1969 and one son. Survivors include three sons, William J. Hathaway of Polson, [living] and Marcus L. Hathaway, both of Missoula; four daughters, Mrs. Lanorah M. Shepard of Missoula, Mrs. Ruth E. Moreland of Cocolla, Idaho, Mrs. Ruby Symington of Elmo and [living], [of] Frenchtown; 31 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, in addition to two brothers, Robert Fair of Polson and Auguest [sic-August] Nelson of Minot, N.D.; three sisters, Mrs. Millie Clews of Staples, Minn., Mrs. Hulda Klingbeil of Briolyn [sic-Bricelyn], Minn. and Mrs. Isabell Bucklin of Graham, Wash. Pastor J. G. Lemnitzer of Missoula will officiate at the Friday services. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery."
