Violet Rae, daughter of Alfred and Florence (Bollmeyer) Sands, was born Aug. 26, 1929, near Danbury. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church (Midway) near Battle Creek. Carlson, 86, of Mapleton, formerly of Smithland, died Sept. 11 at Maple Heights Care Center in Mapleton. Violet Rae, daughter of Alfred and Florence (Bollmeyer) Sands, was born Aug. 26, 1929, near Danbury. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church (Midway) near Battle Creek. She attended country school at Miller Township rural Danbury. On Oct. 1, 1949, Violet was united in marriage to Emery Carlson at St. Paul’s Lutheran Parsonage. They farmed for many years in the Oto and Smithland area before moving into Smithland in 1979. While living in Smithland, she was the custodian of the United Methodist Church for many years. In recent years, Violet made her home in Mapleton. Violet was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. She enjoyed playing cards, family scrapbooking, and attending family events. Violet is survived by two sisters-in-law: Marjorie Smith of Mapleton and Barbara Carlson of Sioux City; nieces; nephews; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emery; and two brothers in infancy. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 14, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton with Pastor Marcus Manley officiating. Music for the service included Laura Neldeberg serving as organist and Dick Chrestensen singing “How Great Thou Art,” “One Day At A Time,” and “Just As I Am.” Pallbearers were Barry Carlson, Brian Carlson, Jim Carlson, Larry Smith, Shawn Smith, and Randy Colshan. Burial was in Little Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
