Description	:	Violet Kaufman was born April 5, 1925 in the rural Freeman/Menno, S.D. area to parents Henry and Karolina (Mehlhaf) Streyle. Violet passed Dec. 16, 2019 at the age of 94 at Freeman Medical Center surrounded by her family. As a young girl, Violet attended Huber Country School. Read More	Violet Kaufman was born April 5, 1925 in the rural Freeman/Menno, S.D. area to parents Henry and Karolina (Mehlhaf) Streyle. Violet passed Dec. 16, 2019 at the age of 94 at Freeman Medical Center surrounded by her family. As a young girl, Violet attended Huber Country School. She was confirmed May 28, 1939 at Zion Reformed Church in rural Menno. Violet met Tom Kaufman while working at Freeman’s City Cafe and the two married Sept. 3, 1958. Tom and Violet had two sons together: Norm and Kim. Violet continued to work over 30 years at numerous restaurants, including the City Cafe, Barb’s, and a few others. She enjoyed working and was able to work into her late 80s. Violet also volunteered at the Freeman Et Cetera Shoppe. Fondly known as the “cookie lady,” Violet loved baking homemade treats for family and the customers of Norm’s Thrifty White Pharmacy. She also enjoyed babysitting throughout the years for grandchildren and family dogs. Left to celebrate Violet’s life are son, Norm (Karen) Kaufman and children Thomas and Katherine of Freeman; son Kim (Loralie) Kaufman and children Ann, Peter, and Joseph of Fort Mills, S.C.; brother Elner (Hulda) Streyle; and sisters Leona Koerner and Esther Wiedenbach. Violet is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Karolina; husband, Tom; brothers, Alvin and Ervin; and sisters, Ruth and Edna.
