Read More	The Gypsum Advocate Thursday, July 8, 1926 Brothers Killed In Engine Explosion One of the most terrible tragedies that has happened in this community occurred Saturday afternoon, July 3, at 3 p.m., when George and Virgil Holcom were fatally injured in an explosion of a steam threshing machine engine about 6 miles northwest of Canton. A few minutes before the accident three other brothers had been seated on the machine with them eating their lunch and had the explosion occurred 10 minutes sooner the casualty list would have been much larger. The brothers had purchased the machine only a short time before and were driving it to the field, with the separator attached behind when the explosion occurred. The bodies were blown into the air, that of George being hurled over back of the separator, while that of Virgil was found in front of the engine. The bodies were horribly mutilated, one being absolutely unrecognizable. Solomon and Newton, two of the other brothers, were within sight of the accident when it occurred and rushing up put the injured boys in the Ford car and started for the McPherson Hospital, having telephoned an ambulance to meet them. They passed away at the hospital, Virgil at 8:20 p.m. and George at 8:30, just 10 minutes apart. The two brothers were reared and spent their entire lives in the vicinity of Gypsum and Canton. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Holcom, who formerly lived in this community but now reside in Canton. George Washington Holcom was born Nov. 30, 1892 in McPherson Co., Kansas and died at the McPherson Hospital July 3, 1926 at the age of 33 years, 7 months and 3 days. He was a veteran of the World War. Virella Virgil Holcom was born in Marion Co., Kansas, January 24, 1901 and died at the McPherson Hospital July 3, 1926 at the age of 25 years, 5 months and 9 days. The two brothers were members of a large family circle of fourteen and this is the first break that has occurred in it. The surviving members of the family are the father, Jonathan Holcom, the mother, Martha Holcom of Canton; six brothers, Glenn of Gypsum, and Andrew, Solomon, Newton, Archie and Chester, all of Canton; four sisters, Ollie, Daisy, Evelyn and Lorraine. Ollie and Evelyn were the only two not present at the funeral, Evelyn being ill at her home in Apperson, Okla. The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Gypsum at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Rev. Owens, officiating, assisted by Rev. Stelson. Members of the American Legion were pallbearers and the body of their deceased comrade and his brother were tenderly laid to rest in a large double grave in the Gypsum Cemetery.
