Her first husband – Lawrence (Larry) Newton predeceased her by sixteen years in July, 1979. She married Elmer Olsen on May 12, 1984; they enjoyed eleven years of loving companionship. Three of her nine children predeceased her – Howard, Marilyn, and Shirley. Her posterity includes thirty five grandchildren, one hundred and ten great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Virgean was the daughter of Willard Gilbert an Mariah Lamb Smith, early pioneers in the Leavitt/Cardston district. Five brothers – Willard, Warren, Clarence, Foyle, and Gilbert predeceased, her; her sister – Cordella (Thad) Gregson, resides in Cardston. She leaves many kind and loyal friends who miss her hospitality, generosity, sense of humor and resourcefulness. Virgean was born in Cardston on April 13, 1907. She has resided in Alberta her entire life except for the time she and Elmer served as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mississippi at the age of 78 years. Her hands were never idle, always knitting or crocheting; a delicious meal could always be ready in a few minutes to travel; and her home was always a comfortable welcoming place for her friends and family. Those who wish, please donate to the Alberta Cancer Foundation 960 – 19th Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J1W5. Friends may meet the family at the Salmon Funeral Home, Cardston on Friday, February 10th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.; or at the Church from 1:00 to 1:40 p.m. prior to Service. The Funeral Service will be held in The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints, Temple Street Chapel, Cardston on Saturday, February 11th at 2:00 p.m. with Bishop Parley Smith officiating.
