Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner is in charge of the arrangements. Virgie passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Stanton Health Center. Virgie Elizabeth (Burris) Frerichs was born September 13, 1916, to William Thomas (W.T.) and Winnie Alee (Ellis) Burris in her parents’ farmhouse near Pilger, NE. She was baptized and confirmed in the Pilger Methodist Church. Virgie attended grade school at Stanton Co. District #43; as an adult she served on its school board since two of her children also attended there. She graduated from Pilger High School in 1933. Virgie met Herbert William Frerichs at a dance in Beemer. Three years later, on March 19, 1936, they were married. They first went to West Point, carrying a letter of permission to marry from Virgie’s father, W.T. since he couldn’t go with them because it would take too much time out of the field. Consequently, the ministers in West Point did not believe them and sent them home. Then they decided to try Stanton. Luckily, the minister believed their letter of permission and they were married in Stanton at the Methodist Parsonage. As newlyweds, Virgie & Herb resided for one year on a farm near Wisner, NE. From then on they resided on several farms in northeast Stanton County, near Pilger. Then, in 1954, she and Herb bought the farm where Virgie was born and raised and moved there in 1958. She still owns the Ellis-Burris-Frerichs farm near Pilger, NE which has been in the family for over 100 years. Virgie was not just a “farmer’s wife”, but also a farmer. She fondly remembers the precious times spent on the farm with Herb and their “chicks” as she lovingly referred to her children. Virgie was a good baseball player since her childhood leisure time was spent outdoors playing baseball with her younger brother, Gif. As an adult, Virgie loved any chance to play two or three man baseball with her kids or any other activity outside. She always referred to herself as more of a “tomboy.” However, she was also a member of the Home Culture Extension Club, the neighborhood sewing club, as well as several pitch and bridge card clubs. One of her more relied upon abilities was to predict the weather with a high percent of accuracy (in competition with Louie Slaybaugh). Her talents included playing the piano and guitar by ear, being a wonderful, loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, as well as a “Master” in many culinary skills. Herb actually wanted Virgie to open a restaurant because of the “rave reviews” received from family and friends on her pies, cinnamon rolls, poppy seed cakes, apple dumplings, and the list goes on and on. Virgie’s strong faith has been a source of support and a common thread throughout her life. She was a lifelong and active member of the Pilger United Methodist Church until its closing in 2012 and currently was been a member of the Stanton United Methodist Church. Her active role ended when she moved into the Stanton Health Center nine years ago. After moving into Assisted Living, being very knowledgeable about the Bible was a great source of inner support for her. Virgie’s knowledge of the Bible was a great asset while an active member since she was the Sunday School teacher for high school level church members which were mostly boys. Over the years and to this day, several of the guys from her Sunday School classes stopped in to visit and thank her for the way she made the teachings of the Bible so interesting for them and how it continues to serve them throughout their adult lives. Being active in Church also gave her an opportunity to be in the church choir, sing gospel music, and harmonize with her beloved brother, Gif. Music was an important part of her life and continued to be while at the Stanton Health Center. As you walked by or entered her room, you usually heard her singing harmony as she listened to the gospel songs on her iPod. Virgie did not have the opportunity to go to college but became self-educated and in 2006, Virgie’s family bestowed on her three honorary degrees—1) Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, 2) Master’s Degree in Home Engineering, and 3) Doctor of Philosophy in Biblical Information and Distribution. When asked what her greatest joy was or what she needed more than anything else, Virgie’s answer was, “My Family and Faith.” That truly expresses how she felt about her life ever since she was a little girl. When Virgie was four years old, her Mom contracted “sleeping sickness” and lived the last 17 years of her life at home as an invalid. Virgie reflected on those years lovingly. She always looked upon them with a special sense of serenity and fondness. She credited her Dad and Mom for her positive outlook and strong Faith.
