He entered the armed forces June 28, 1941 and served overseas in the European Theatre of Operations as Battery Commander of Battery B,, 802nd Field Artillery Battalion participating in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns uder the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 9th Armies. He commanded 92 enlisted men and four officers with four 105mm. Howitzers. Virgil was responsible for the battery's administration and intelligence and he estimated situations, formulated decisions and suported units. For his service to his country Virgil received the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with four battle stars, Gronze Star Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, WW II Victory Medal and the Distinguished Unit Citation. He separated from military service on Mar. 18, 1946 at Fort Leavenworth, KS. having attained the rank of Major. Virgil was united in marriage to Rose T. Jazwiec on Nov. 28, 1941 at the Post Chapel in Ft. Sill, OK. they had no children. Virgil then farmed southeast of Cook until 1967. Teaching at Tecumseh Public Schools since 1956 where he taught high school history. In 1967 he became principal of the Tecumseh J.-Sr. High School. retiring from the Tecumseh School system in 1985. From 1974 until 1978 he was Mayor of Tecumseh. In 2006 he moved to Bell Terrace in Tecumseh, NE. He died there at age 93 years. He is survived by his wife, Rose of Tecumseh, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousinf. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services held at St. Paul's United Church of Christ (Osage) north of Cook, NE. Nov. 13, 2012 with Rev. Curtis Rieger and Rev. Ken Tubbesing officiating. Interment was in the St. Paul's United Church of Christ (Osage) Cemetery, rural Cook, NE. with full military rites.
