When he was 19 years old, he joined the Army to serve his country during World War II, landing at Omaha Beach D-Day plus six. It was during his time overseas where he met his wife of 38 years, Eileen Morris. When he returned to the States, he and Eileen continued their long distance romance until Virgil had saved enough money to bring Eileen to the States. They were married in 1950 and had two sons, Terry and David. For 33 years, Virgil worked in the sheep kill at John Morrell and Company, retiring in 1983. He was a wonderful husband and father who loved to spend time with his boys and spent many hours coaching the boys; bowling teams. The boys have many wonderful memories of Saturday mornings and summer vacations. Another passion was his grandchildren. Virgil loved all of his grandchildren, Haleigh, Natalie, Tim, Abby, Chelsea and Brandon. Even though he didnt live in the same city, he made it a point to keep in touch via weekly phone calls and birthday cards. More recently, Virgil was able to enjoy time kissing and cuddling with his two great granddaughters, Piper and Sophia, with his relocation to live with Laure and Dave in Parkville, MO. Virgil was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa, great grandpa, brother, uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed. Grateful for having shared his life are his sons, Terry and wife, Carla of Omaha NE, Dave and wife, Laure of Parkville MO; brother, Donald and his wife, Ethel of Sioux Falls; 6 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Center for Active Generations at 2300 W. 46th St., Sioux Falls SD, 57105. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eileen; brothers, Harry, Harold and Orville; and sisters, Marvelle, Margie, Margaret, Ethel and Mildred.
