Atkins - Funeral services were held yesterday at 3:30 in Beahm's Chapel Cemetery for Virgil Clyde Atkins, 31, who drowned in the Delaware River shortly before midnight at Marcus Hook, Pa. on April 10, 1944. The body located by Coast Guards was brought to Luray on Tuesday morning. Atkins had been a member of the Merchant Marines since February 26th of this year. The body located by Coast Guards was brought to Luray on Tuesday morning. Atkins had been a member of the Merchant Marines since February 26th of this year. Although no one witnessed the accident his personal belongings were found in the water by the ship. The search was then instigated by the Coast Guards for the body. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Armenia Wood Atkins of Luray, his father, Ezra C. Atkins, two sisters, Mrs. Louise Shenk and Miss Evelyn Atkins and two nephews. Rev. Ray Smith officiated at the last rites. Pallbearers were: Clyde Atkins, Jack Wallace, James Darnell, Carl Bailey, Norris Richards and Desper Judd. Carrying flowers were: Elva Burner, Garnet Griffith, Mary E. Ramey, Helen Good, Virginia Ponn, Edna Burner and Evelyn Martin. (PNC)
