Rowe, 93, of Fremont died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, at Fremont Health Medical Center in Fremont. Virgil was born July 1, 1922, in Johnson County in Nebraska to Cecil and Lydia (Doeden) Rowe. He grew up at Burr and Percival, Iowa. His mother passed away when he was 16 months old and he was raised by his grandparents until the age of 7, when he moved in with his father and stepmother. He served in the U.S. Air Force from Sept. 1, 1942, until Nov. 22, 1945. During World War II, he graduated from Sparton School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Okla., then B24 Specialist School in Willow Run, Mich., and Gunnery School in Wendover, Utah, where he remained as an instructor. He married Margaret Focht on Feb. 7, 1944, in Omaha. She died July 15, 1999. They lived in Utah where he was stationed. He later served with the 20th Air Force in Guam with the 501st Bomb Group, receiving two Battle Stars. They moved to Fremont in 1945. He was also active in the Air Force Reserves for seven years. He worked as parts manager for Peterson Machine Shop in Fremont for 20 years before starting Oakland Auto Supply with a partner in Oakland, where he worked for 10 years. He worked as parts manager for Bellevue Honda Shop in Bellevue until retiring in 1984. Virgil was a member of First Baptist Church in Fremont for over 60 years. He was active on many church committees and ushered for many years. He was a member of the Helping Hands Sunday school class. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars post 854 of Fremont and a 60-year member of Masonic Lodge 15, A.F. & A.M., Fremont Shrine Club, The Oriental Band, Tangier Shrine and the Scottish Rite of Omaha. He served on the Civil Service Commission for 44 years and was a tax counselor for the elderly for several years. He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Pam Rowe of Fremont; son-in-law, Wayne (and wife, Laurie) Jacobsen of Fremont; grandsons, Jay Jacobsen and Jon (and wife, Charlotte) Jacobsen; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Darrell Rowe; sisters, Lorane Cox and Annabelle McMullin; sister-in-law, Violet Rowe; good friend, Bonnie (and husband, Dwain) Longe; and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; daughter, Beverly Jacobsen; son, Benny Rowe; stepmother, Lydia (Nieman) Rowe; and his brothers and sisters. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Fremont. The Revs. Leland Foreman and Brad Wiese will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Friday at the church. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military honors. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church in Fremont or Tangier Shrine Fund for Shrine Hospitals.
