Bankson of 1130 Monroe died at 8:35 a.m. Monday, May 28, 1984, while visiting relatives in Boise, Idaho. He was 76 years old. Bankson retired from John Morrell and Co. in February 1963 after working there since 1930. He continued working part-time as an operator for the United Food and Commercial Workers union. For more than 20 years, Bankson was chief steward of Local P-1, the first packinghouse worker's union in the nation. He was born May 17, 1908, at Centerville to Joseph and Mina Long Bankson. One of eight children, his father was an evangelist. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church and married Josephine Weese on Dec. 24, 1927, in Ottumwa. She died in 1982. On April 28, 1984, he married Martha Macklin, who survives. He is also survived by a son, LeMar of Denver, Colo.; two grandsons; four brothers, Arthur of Ottumwa Route 4, Robert of Bloomfield, Clint of Oregon and William of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Ruby Silliman of Des Moines; a stepson James Macklin of Boise, Idaho; and four stepgrandchildren. Visitation will be at the Johnson Funeral Chapel in Ottumwa after noon Thursday. The service is pending at the funeral chapel. --------------- Funeral Service Notice From "Ottumwa Courier," Friday, June 1, 1984, Page 7: The service for Virgil F. Bankson, 76, of 1130 Monroe, who died May 28, 1984, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Johnson Funeral Chapel, the Rev. R.J. Conover of Faith Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joe, Donnie, Ron and Kenny Bankson and Larry and Dan Terrell. Memorials may be made to the Faith Baptist Church.
