Johnson Virgil F "Bud" JOHNSON, former Rochester fire chief who was a candidate for mayor in this spring's primary election, died this morning at 4 o'clock at South Bend Memorial hospital, where he had been a patient since June 12. Mr. Johnson, who was 57 years of age, resided at 325 Main street. Mr. Johnson was second in a three-man race for the Republican nomination as mayor in the May 4 voting, losing to Wayne HITTLE by 284 votes. It was his first political contest. He had been chief of the Rochester fire department for nine years, serving under three mayors from 1948-57. He first joined the department as a volunteer in 1940. He became associated with the American LaFrance Fire Equipment company in 1957 as a sales representative, continuing in that capacity until his death. In 1962, Mr. Johnson organized his own firm as well, Hoosier Fire Equipment Inc., with offices here and at Valparaiso. A lifelong resident of Fulton county, he attended grade school at Grass Creek and graduated from Fulton High school in 1932. The following year he moved to Rochester, where he was associated with his parents in operation of the Johnson Dairy until 1942. Later he owned and operated the Dairy Bar, a restaurant, on East Eighth street. Born Feb. 27, 1914, at Peru, he was the son of Ford and Marie THOMPSON JOHNSON. His marriage was Sept. 21, 1932, in this city to Meriam LEAVELL, who survives. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Moose, Elks and Eagles lodges here and belonged to the Indiana Fire Chiefs, International Fire Chiefs, Indiana Fire Fighters and the Indiana Volunteer Fire Fighters associations. Surviving, besides the wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Jackie) EILER, Rochester, and Mrs. Nick (Peggy) SWARTZ, Valparaiso; his mother, Mrs. Marie THOMPSON, Rochester; one brother, Vernon "Bill" JOHNSON, Earp, Cal., and seven grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Jeanne Anne LOWE, preceded in death May 23, 1968. Last rites will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home with the Rev. C. J. MOWRER officiating.
