The Le Mars man was eastbound on Highway 20, about 2 1/2 miles west of Johnstown when the load of cattle he was hauling shifted, causing Renken to lose control of his semi, Brown County, Neb., Deputy Sheriff Dan Johnson told the Daily Sentinel. Renken’s truck then struck a guard rail and went off the bridge into Plum Creek. Renken was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the tractor which landed on the east bank of the creek. The trailer and load of 57 cattle landed in the creek which is 10 feet wide and 2 feet deep. The cattle were all killed. Deputy Brown said Renken was dead at the scene and was taken by the Ainsworth, Neb., ambulance to the Hochs Funeral Home at Ainsworth. The 1981 Freightliner tractor and trailer owned by Harlan Wagner Trucking of Merrill were demolished. Funeral for Mr. Renken will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Grant Township, Plymouth County. Rev. Jack Hebard will officiate. Burial will be in the Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery in Grant Township, Plymouth County, with military graveside rites conducted by Wilkens-Heeren-McHale Post 724 of the American Legion. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Mr. Renken was born Dec. 31, 1944, at Hawarden, the son of Etta Frerichs Renken and the late Gareith Renken. He graduated from Le Mars Community High School in 1963. He married Joyce Smith Sept. 8, 1968 at Christ Lutheran Church in Grant Township. He was a farmer and truck driver and served in the Iowa National Guard. Mr. Renken was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where he held many offices. He was a member of Wilken-Heeren-McHale Post 724 of the American Legion at Brunsville, president of the Farmers Co-op Elevator at Craig and a member of the Pioneer Machinery Club. He started Little League at Craig and had been a manager of the men’s fast-pitch softball team. Survivors are his wife, Joyce of rural Le Mars; a son, Troy, and a daughter, Stephanie, both at home; his mother; Etta Renken, of Le Mars, and a sister Mrs. Jerry (Ardis) Johnson of Le Mars.
