He married Ruth Birkholz of Grand Forks... Read More	Virgil G. McCann, 91, long-time resident of Thompson, ND died Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks, ND. Virgil was born to James T. and Anna (Schumacher) McCann in rural Colgate, ND on December 8, 1917. He attended grade school in Reynolds, ND; graduated from Thompson High School and attended Wahpeton State School of Science. In 1941, he rode his Harley motorcycle to California where he worked at Lockheed airplane factory. In 1942, he returned to North Dakota to work on the family farm in Thompson. He married Ruth Birkholz of Grand Forks in St. Jude's Catholic Church in Thompson on March 6, 1943. Together, they raised six children on the family grain and dairy farm west of Thompson. He worked for many years as a welder for Johnson Iron in East Grand Forks, MN. Virgil was very active in local groups such as the Grand Forks Roller Skate Club, Thompson School Board, Thompson PTA, National Farmers Organization, and Knights of Columbus, a lifelong member of St. Jude's Catholic Church. He served on the church council during the building of the current church in the 60's. He led the Thompson Bachelors 4-H club for 10 years. He enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle with his sons and friends to Sturgis, SD in the 1960's. Virgil will be well remembered by many members of the square dance community. He became a Square Dance Caller in 1964. He taught many people to dance at his well attended lessons. Often the newly trained dancers would form a local club in their area with Virgil as the caller. The first being the Toms 'n' Tabbies, in Thompson. He was also caller for several area clubs including the Skirts & Shirts in Grand Forks. He did guest calling throughout North Dakota and Minnesota. Virgil called at National Conventions in both the U.S. and Canada. He often was master of ceremonies and worked with the sound systems at these events. At Callerlab, he received recognition for 25 years as caller and leader of both square and round dancing. He and his wife lead a tour of square dancers to Switzerland. In later years, he taught line dancing to many Grand Forks senior citizens. He is survived by children, Carol Spicer, James V. (Jane), Grand Forks, ND, Mary (Larry) Adams, Tarpon Springs, FL, Donna, Bismarck, ND, Dan, Thompson, and Betty (Charles) Silvia, Durham, NC, 12 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren, a sister, Kathryn (William) Dahlmann, Belleville, IL and Ruth McCann, Tarpon Springs, FL. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Archie and Charles, and infant sister Betty. We wish to thank the staff at Parkwood Place, Valley Eldercare and Hospice for the excellent care they gave Virgil. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2009 in St. Jude's Catholic Church, Thompson, ND. Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service and 4:30 p.m. rosary service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Monday. Burial: St. Jude's Catholic Cemetery, Thompson, ND.
