He was raised in Ute and Mapleton area by Arnold and Vesta Melby along with his brother Duane and sister Sharon. On January 23, 1951 Virgil married Janet Ione Vahler. Janet was the daughter of Paul and Edith Lyons Vahler. Born on September 9, 1934. We had five children, losing one boy at birth, Bruce Allan on October 24, 1956. Marlene Joyce born September 10, 1951 to Elmer and Mirian Cooper. They now reside in Mapleton with their children, Heidi Rae and Heather Mae born January 25, 1974. Heather died January 29, 1974. Christina Lynn born September 1, 1975, Lauri Danielle December 6, 1977 and Amo Jo, April 14, 1986. James William born October 18. 1952 and married Jill Wilson, August 17, 1973. Jill is the daughter of John and Katherine Wilson and was born May 26, 1954 . Jim and Jill live on an acreage outside of Soldier. Richard Dean born November 6, 1953 and married Joy Ella Ulven on November 2, 1974. Joy was born February 3, 1955 to Verne and Leona Ulven. They have four children, Tracy Jo, January 20, 1975, Darcy Marie, January 9, 1978, Jacob Dean, January 14, 1979, and Kassie Lee, July 30, 1985. Joy and Rick live in Soldier. Cynthia Ann was born June 19, 1955 and married Ronald LaVerne Holt, June 6, 1981. Ron is the son of Jane and Stanley Holt born July 1, 1954. They have two daughters, Lacy Jaye, November 16, 1983, and Katie Ann, March 7, 1987. Ron and Cindy live in Soldier. We have lived in soldier and in June operated Ehlers Oil Company for 20 years. OBITUARY: SOLDIER, Iowa -- Virgil Ehlers, 78, of Soldier died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Soldier Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Meggan Manlove officiating. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa. Virgil was born May 20, 1930, in Ute, Iowa, the son of Otto and Vesta (Price) Ehlers. He was raised in the Soldier and Mapleton, Iowa, areas by Arnold and Vesta Melby. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He and Janet Vahler were united in marriage on Jan. 23, 1951, in Mapleton. They lived in Ohio and Mapleton for several years before moving to Soldier in 1967, where they established Ehlers Oil. Janet passed away March 28, 2008 in Mapleton. He was currently operating Ehlers Oil and looked forward to morning coffee and afternoon visits at the station with his many friends. He was baptized and confirmed at Soldier Lutheran Church on Nov. 25, 1945. He was member of Soldier Volunteer Fire Department for more than 40 years. Survivors include his children and their spouses, Marlene and Dan Cooper of Mapleton, Jim and Jill Ehlers of Soldier, Rick and Joy Ehlers of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Cindy and Ron Holt of Soldier; 11 grandchildren, Heidi, Tracy, Christi, Laurie, Darcy, Jacob, Lacey, Kassi, Amy, Katie and Melanie; 10 great-grandchildren and expecting three additional; his father, Arnold Melby of Soldier; his siblings and their spouses, Duane and Myrna Melby of Soldier, Sharon and Bill Markey of Oregon, and Roger and Judy Ehlers of Soldier; and a sister-in-law, Betty Jensen of Kansas. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his mother, Vesta Melby; a son, Bruce; a granddaughter, Heather Cooper; and a brother-in-law, Russell Jensen.
