Description	:	On July 27, 1850, Virgil Daviess is working on the farm of his future parents-in-law, Thomas Jefferson Howard and wife Persis Hannah Barnhill. (Persis is the daughter of James Barnhill and Hannah Ann Boone.) The location of the farm is District 1, Daviess County, Kentucky. It is unknown how the name was spelled prior to their settlement in Kentucky. Virgil and Ruhema Frances' first child Sarah was born July 15, 1851 in Daviess County, and they raised their family there until they migrated to Kansas around the year of the birth of their youngest child, Lillian Orra (Mrs. William Harrison Burkel), which was 4 Oct 1873/74. Records vary with the year, as well as whether she was born in Kentucky or Kansas. Sometimes it is even found spelled Davis. The family pronounced it Daviess and were proud of the family name in Kentucky, according to stories told by their daughter Helen Elizabeth "Beth" Davies. (Some researchers/transcribers don't realize that the elongated cursive "s's" in a word that looks like "f"s are actually their way of making double lower case s's in those days.
