Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Hoven, with Father Kevin Doyle, Celebrant. Burial follows at the Church Cemetery. Mass servers will be Dana Hageman and Chayce Rausch. Organist will be Alice Simon and St. Anthony’s Church Choir will sing "On Eagle's Wings", "Gather Your People", "Blest Are They" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". Offertory gift bearers will be Virgil’s grandchildren. Placing the pall on the casket will be Virgil’s granddaughters—Sarah Price, Rachael Schilder, Katie Pietig, Jennifer Hagen, Chelsey Hunnel, Stephanie Gregg, and Jessica Holscher. Eucharistic Ministers will be Jennifer Hagen and Susan Gregg. There will be a Wake Service at the Church 7:00 PM Tuesday with visitation beginning 5:30 PM. Memorials are preferred to Hoven Ambulance Service, Box 162, Hoven, SD 57450. Virgil John Abler, son of Anna (Hoerner) and Martin Abler, was born on five miles west and ½ mile south of Hoven on January 10, 1933. He attended rural school and Hoven High School. Following his schooling, he helped his dad on the farm. Virgil married Loretta Hartung at Hoven on June 22, 1955. They made their home and farmed four miles west and 1 ½ miles south of Hoven. Loretta died December 22, 1990. Virgil stayed on the farm until January 1997 when he relocated into Hoven. Although living in town, Virgil maintained a strong interest in farming the rest of his days. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Church and also served on the Hoven Co-op Board of Directors for nine years. Virgil shot a lot of gophers and enjoyed his routine of getting up in the morning and having coffee with his friends. Virgil is survived by one son—Richard (Shari) Abler of Hoven; three daughters—Kathy Williams of Hoven, Susan (Kevin) Gregg of Rapid City, SD, and Carla (Marlin) Nipp of Pierre, SD; one brother Wayne Abler of Mt. Shasta, CA; two sisters—LaVerne Dylla of Avon, MN and Shirley Vargas of Indianapolis, IN; 15 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and son-in-law Patrick Breen of Seneca, SD. In addition to Loretta, he was preceded in death by his father on February 20, 2002, his mother on August 21, 1999, one daughter (Janet Breen), one grandson (Michael Breen), two brothers (Roger and Gordon), and a son-in-law (Ed Williams).
