He was born July 2, 1917, in Defiance County, the son of John and Lavilla (Hardy) Feeney. In 1941, he married Grace Leslie, who survives. He was a... Read More	Defiance Crescent-News Obituary Virgil M. Feeney, 79, 208 Wyandotte Ave., died Thursday, May 8, 1997 at Defiance Hospital. He was born July 2, 1917, in Defiance County, the son of John and Lavilla (Hardy) Feeney. In 1941, he married Grace Leslie, who survives. He was a 1936 graduate of Defiance High School, attended Defiance College until 1937. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, received a Purple Heart with an oak leaf cluster for his duties in the Omaha Beach Invasion. He was a foreman at General Motors for 22 years retiring in 1970. He was a member of Zion's Lutheran Church, Defiance Elks Post 147, Continental's American Legion Post 541, and Defiance College's Purple and Gold Club, Varsity D Association, and Alumni Association. He was a life member of VFW Post 3360, and DAV Post 36. He was also a member of the 83rd Infantry Division Association. In 1937, he played for Fostoria Red Birds and in 1940, he signed with Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1945, he pitched in the Federation League, playing for Fort Wayne. He later signed with Brooklyn Dodgers in Zanesville. He also coached Little League Baseball and Pony League. He was the recipient of the DC Hall of Fame award in 1984, and was inducted into the DC Hall of Fame in 1990. Also surviving are six sons, Raymond of San Jose, California, David of Monroeville, Indiana, William of Syracuse, Indiana, Ned and Terry, both of Defiance, and Ted, Troy; a sister, Ollie Kimble, Angola, Indiana; a brother, Paul, Oakwood; 17 grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence, Raymond and William; six sisters, Harriet Max, Nellie Hoover, Severna Wells, Alta Seiple, Estella Feeney and Ethel Little. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home, with Rev. Roy Craig officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery with VFW Post 3360 conducting military rites. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. An Elks memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
