He attended Whitten School. He married Ruby Mikkelson on August 28, 1928, in Estherville. He farmed in Whitten for a short time, worked at the Whitten Elevator, and at Union-Whitten schools as a custodian and bus driver from 1948-1980. He was a member of the Union Community Church, Whitten Fire Department, and Moose Lodge in Marshalltown. Survivors include two sons, Arlyn Mitchell of Marshalltown and Larry Mitchell of Conrad; a daughter, Charlene (Dale) Gibbs, Conrad; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
