Description	:	Virgil R. Mahlen, age 87 of Watertown, SD, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Jenkins Living Center. Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown. Reverend Gary Westgard will officiate with Randy Owen as soloist accompanied by A.J. Sherrill. Inurnment will be at a later date at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Virgil Romane Mahlen was born April 30, 1930 to Elmer and Hazel (Hagen) Mahlen in Pierpont, South Dakota. He grew up in Roslyn and attended school there. Virgil joined the United States Army on March 19, 1953 and served during the Korean Conflict. During his military service he obtained his GED and was honorably discharged on March 18, 1955. Following his discharge, he returned to South Dakota. On August 15, 1953, Virgil married Geraldine Moen at the Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown and the couple made their home in Watertown. Three children were born to this union. Virgil was a dairy cattle buyer and seller for over 30 years. He was also a Standard Oil Bulk agent for five years. Virgil was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed going to the car races, going to the casino and playing the machines, and visiting with friends and relatives. He loved his scooter walks with his best friend, Otis the pug. Virgil is survived by his wife, Geraldine; his children, Kirk (Kathy) Mahlen and their children, Erika (Greg) Messler and Janik Mahlen of Eden Prairie, MN, Kay Mahlen (Roger Amdahl) of Sioux Falls, SD and Kelly (Jackie) Mahlen and their children, Nicole Mahlen (Travis Van Well), Domenik (Brittney) Mahlen and Morgan Mahlen of Watertown, SD; his great-granddaughter, Teagan Mahlen of Watertown, SD; his brother-in-law, Darwin Giese; his nephews and nieces; and best friend, Otis the Pug. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Jeanette (Sydney) Syverson, Violet (Jarvis) Nerland, Lois Giese and Curtis (Mavis) Mahlen. - Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel
