Description	:	Virgil VerMaas, 91, of Lincoln, passed away on February 16, 2022. Virgil was born June 4, 1930 to Christian Leonard, "CL" and Alpha VerMaas in Roca Nebraska. Virgil met Mary Lou while she was going to school in Firth. Rumor has it that the first time Dad saw Mom she was waiting along the road for a ride to Firth to school. Read More	Virgil VerMaas, 91, of Lincoln, passed away on February 16, 2022. Virgil was born June 4, 1930 to Christian Leonard, "CL" and Alpha VerMaas in Roca Nebraska. Virgil met Mary Lou while she was going to school in Firth. Rumor has it that the first time Dad saw Mom she was waiting along the road for a ride to Firth to school. Dad saw her, drove around the block but she was gone when he came back. He did find her and the rest was history. They were married on July 5, 1950 and enjoyed 66 years together. Virgil started working with building power lines and during this time they lived in several communities across Nebraska. They settled in the Hickman area in 1956 and lived there until 2007 when they moved to Savanah Pines in Lincoln. Virgil started working for the Capitol Telephone Co in Hickman and continued to work with phone companies until retiring from Lincoln Telephone in 1993. As an active member of Shrine, Scottish Rite and Masons, Virgil was very involved in their activities. He belonged to Hickman Lodge 256. He achieved a thirty three degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was involved in the Little Cars, Jesters, and the Gourmet club in the Sesostris Shrine. Virgil and MaryLou enjoyed traveling and camping with their family and friends. The children remember vacations, fishing, camping in a tent and then popup camper. Eventually a fifth wheel camper, larger than the trailer they lived in while working on the power lines, provided a more luxurious camping experience. They visited both of the coast, Alaska, and many places in between and spent winters in Arizona for 15 years. Virgil was proud of his involvement with the consolidation that formed Norris School District in 1965 and served on the first school board. He attended many athletic and extracurricular activities at Norris as well as the Hickman Presbyterian Church while the children grew up. He was always willing to provide help to those around him, never hesitating to pitch in. His phone background provided an electrical expertise which was frequently utilized by children, grand and great children while working on building projects. His greatest joy was spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren attending their many activities. Virgil has spent the last four years with special friend Marge Stottler. Marge and her husband Glen lived in Hickman while Glen worked for the phone company and their families spent time together. They reconnected and have been a blessing to each other. In addition to going back and forth between Lincoln and Bloomfield they traveled to visit many friends and family. Preceded in death by his parents; wife Mary Lou of 66 years, grandson, Kyle VerMaas and three sisters, Letha Clement, Viva Craig and Evelyn Birrell. Virgil will be remembered as someone willing to lend a hand, tease the kids, respond to those in need, and building friendships with everyone he met. He touched the lives of many people with his kindness, caring, helping and will be missed by all of those who knew him.
