Marvin Salz was the Mass celebrant. Interment was in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by Aloysius Schmitt American Legion Post 691 of St. Lucas. Virgil's death occurred Friday, March 16, 2007, at Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, following a lingering illness. Virgil William Gerleman was born on a farm near St. Lucas on Oct. 28, 1930, to Aloysius and Rose Marie (Tillman) Gerleman. He attended St. Luke's Catholic School in St. Lucas. Virgil served in the U.S. Army from June 10, 1952-May 12, 1954, during the Korean War. On May 1, 1956, Virgil was united in marriage with Grace Ann Lensing at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in New Hampton. He farmed his entire life near St. Lucas and worked the farm on which he was born. Virgil was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, the Rev. Laverne Gerleman, Hugo Gerleman, Matthew Gerleman and Edmund Gerleman; a sister, Thecla Lechtenberg; and a nephew. Survivors include his wife, Grace, of Fort Atkinson; a son, Glenn Gerleman of Fort Atkinson; three daughters, Janice (William) Holthaus of Calmar, Darlene (James) Koenig of Byron, Minn., and Kathleen (Guy) Gregerson of LaCrosse, Wis.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Florian "Jimmy" (Marlys) Gerleman of Charles City; and a sister, Agnes Galligan of Lawler.
