She had been in declining health for four years. Mrs. Peck was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Rowan County, the daughter of the late Nettie Jackson Doby and Fred P. Cauble. Virginia Cauble Peck, of Richmond Hill, Ga.,transcended into Heaven to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Bryan County Health and Rehab Center. She had been in declining health for four years. Mrs. Peck was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Rowan County, the daughter of the late Nettie Jackson Doby and Fred P. Cauble. A lifelong resident of Salisbury, she was educated in Salisbury City Schools and retired from R.W. Norman's Draperies of Salisbury, where she worked as a seamstress over 19 years. A lifetime member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, she was active in the Women's Society for a number of years and served as president in 1961-62. A wonderful Southern cook, she was well-known for her special chocolate pies made with her own secret ingredient she made for her family and Coburn Church members. Not only could she make a great pie, she also won a Blue Ribbon at the Rowan County Fair for her red velvet pound cake. Married 51 years to Buddy Peck, who was a soloist for over 50 years in the Coburn Church choir. They enjoyed dancing and competing in area dance contests in their early years of courting and marriage and prior to raising a family of four kids, "a bushel of Pecks" Mrs. Virginia participated in the Senior Citizens water exercise program at the Salisbury YMCA for over 25 years. Learning to swim at age 70, she won a Gold Medal at the age of 84 in the YMCA senior Water Olympics. She was also a member of the YMCA Y Wonders. singing group, traveling around to local churches and nursing homes to entertain and spread a little sunshine to brighten their days. In 2004, Mrs. Virginia suffered a disabling stroke and moved to Bryan County Health and Rehab in Richmond Hill to be closer to her daughter, Faye, and family. Even though she could no longer walk, she continued to enjoy singing, laughing and joking, giving hope and endless smiles to the faces of residents and workers who gladly joined in singing with "the singing lady." She knew the words by heart to every hymn in the Methodist Hymnal. On Friday, July 18, 2008, her voice suddenly fell silent when Mrs. Virginia suffered a massive stroke. Everyone who knew and loved her will forever miss this happy little voice from such a sweet, feisty little lady. She greatly touched the lives of so many in her own special way. Mrs. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey "Buddy" Peck in 1986; Survivors include; three daughters Faye and husband Jack Mintz of Black Creek, Ga., Claudia and husband Roy Dickson of Jacksonville, Fla., and Melodye and husband Michael Steverson of Spring Hill, Fla.; one son, Dewey and wife Carolyn Peck of Salisbury. There are also six grandchildren to remember Granny Peck's entertaining personality: Jeanette Taylor of Black Creek, Ga., Jeff Simerson of Fletcher, Janis Morton of Deltona, Fla., Ginny Steverson of Spring Hill, Fla., and Randy and Allen Peck of Salisbury; six great-grandchildren; and a host of friends. Service: A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lyerly Funeral Home's James C. Lyerly Chapel. Burial will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
