Interment will follow at the Upland Cemetery, Upland, Nebraska. Virginia Darlene Bertrand, 94 years of age, of Omaha, Nebraska, formerly of Holdrege, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at her home in Omaha. Virginia was born May 4, 1921, on a farm, south of Oakley, Kansas, the second of five children born to Chester and Doris E. (Romans) Goble. Virginia grew up and graduated from Monument High School, with the class of 1941. On February 9, 1942, she was united in marriage to Francis Bertrand in Oakley, Kansas and to this union, three sons were born: Dennis, Lyndell and Marlin. Virginia and Francis first made their home in Upland, where they engaged in farming and then in the 1950s, they began to make their home in Holdrege and continued to farm in both Phelps County and Harlan County. Virginia owned and operated a jewelry store in the strip mall near Shopko, called Holdrege Jewelry. On May 2, 1975, Francis preceded her in death. In 1976, Virginia and her son, Dennis began to make their home in Omaha, where Virginia’s sister, Donna was their devoted caretaker. Virginia enjoyed reading, playing the piano, travelling throughout the United States and collecting figurines. She was also an accomplished artist and enjoyed interior decorating. Virginia also owned and operated a restaurant in Omaha, called GiGi’s Golden Spur, on 60th and Ames Streets. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Francis; and her sons, Lyndell Bertrand and his wife, Laura Lee and Dennis Bertrand. She leaves to celebrate her life; son, Marlin Bertrand and his wife, Rochelle of Holdrege; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three sisters: Carolyn Robertson and her husband, Bob of Hobbs, New Mexico, Sheryl Place of Hastings, Nebraska and Donna Rae Spence of Omaha; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation was held on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. A memorial has been established in Virginia’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
