Mrs. Slice died at the Heritage at Lowman, White Rock, SC, on April 29, 2009. Born on October 31, 1917, she was the daughter of David Miley Varn and Jennie Lou Bird Varn of Islandton, SC. A 1937 graduate of Columbia College, she did further study at Emory University, the University of Georgia, and several Nebraska colleges. She worked with her pastor and husband, the Rev. John Slice, in South Carolina, Georgia, and Nebraska, and was especially active in the work of the women's groups of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and its predecessor bodies. She held several offices at the local and state levels, and from 1957 to 1962 served as Synodical President of the Central States Lutheran Church Women of the LCA. She retired with her husband to the Chapin area in 1974, and was an active member of St. Jacob's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chapin. She was an avid bridge player and loved taking trips with her husband in their travel trailer. Virginia was beloved to many for her ready wit and her keen sense of humor. She participated in the leadership of St. Jacob's Up and Going and the Dutch Forkers senior citizen groups. She initiated the Chapin Chirpers as a community women's singing group in 1984 and sang with the group until December 2008. The group continues in its ministry of singing in community events. Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Gary Marco of Chapin; son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Slice of Durant, OK; grandchildren, Alane Marco of New York City, Suzanne Engelke (Jeff) of Roseville, CA, Alan Marco (Dorene) of Roanoke, VA, and Brenda (Roy) Rhodes of Lewisville, TX, and six great-grandchildren. © The State, Columbia, SC, 1 May 2009
