Prior to a fall two weeks ago, Virginia was doing well and her wry sense of humor was still intact. She recently noted that she was quite surprised every morning when she woke up. Virginia was born June 11, 1910 to Henry and Ethel Woldt in Sioux Falls, S.D. She passed away August 13, 2017, after celebrating and thoroughly enjoying her 107th birthday with family and friends. She was raised with her seven brothers and sisters on a farm outside of Rutland, S.D. While in high school she was a standout basketball player known affectionately by her nickname ‘Peanut.’ In 1925 she and her winning team from this very small school advanced and played in the South Dakota basketball championship in Mitchell. Recently she was honored by the South Dakota Basketball Association Hall of Fame as a ‘Pioneer of the Game’. This year she was also honored by the South Dakota Healthcare Association as ‘South Dakota Centenarian of 2017,’ the most senior citizen in the state. In her early years she was employed by the Rozum Motor Company in Watertown as their bookkeeper, where she met and married Benjamin Earl Mills in 1938. Later, for many years, she was an interior decorator for Davey’s Furniture Company in Watertown. She is survived by two sons; Gordon Earl Mills and wife, Carol, of Park City, Utah, and Russell Henry Mills and wife Janet, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, and her remaining sibling, Donna Woldt McGrath of Madison, S.D. and sister-in-law, Ona Woldt of Sioux Falls, S.D., and many nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brothers: Kenneth, Carroll, and Dwaine; sisters: Derva Stampe, Marion Wallenfelt, and Mildred Woldt. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Watertown for more than 70 years.
