Description	:	On October 4, 1938, Virginia “Fern” Pickard was born to James and Marie Pickard on the family farm northeast of Vona, CO. She was welcomed home by big brothers Harold, Kenneth and Louis and big sisters Leona and Velma. Being the youngest, with 18 years age difference between her and Harold, Harold’s boys Larry and Don were closer to her age than her own siblings. Read More	On October 4, 1938, Virginia “Fern” Pickard was born to James and Marie Pickard on the family farm northeast of Vona, CO. She was welcomed home by big brothers Harold, Kenneth and Louis and big sisters Leona and Velma. Being the youngest, with 18 years age difference between her and Harold, Harold’s boys Larry and Don were closer to her age than her own siblings. Fern grew up with her nephews and formed a lifelong friendship with the two of them. In 1946 the family moved into a home in Vona so Velma and Fern could attend school without having to drive. Fern graduated from Vona High School in 1956. The summer after graduation, Fern moved with her friend Hazel Burian (Card) to Colorado Springs and worked for a telephone company. When she returned home at the end of the summer, Fern met the love of her life at a dance in Vona. She married on October 6, 1957 at the Vona Baptist Church where Fern was baptized as a young girl. Her husband liked to tell the story that he had to wait until after Fern’s birthday to marry her. Hence, the wedding date 2 days after her 19th birthday. The couple settled on a farm northwest of Seibert. Not long after they moved 10.5 miles north of Vona on what is known as the McCaffrey home place. Here the couple was blessed with four children. In 1966 the family moved to farm southwest of Otis. In 1968 the family then moved back to the home place north of Vona. In addition to being a stay-at-home mom to their children, Fern enjoyed helping her husband in the fields driving the tractor and spending many hours driving the grain and silage trucks. She spent what little spare time she had playing the piano and working on sewing projects. Fern made many short sets, Easter and prom dresses for the girls and many other beautiful pieces. In August of 1990 the couple bought another farm site southeast of Cope. Not long after moving into their new home, they purchased a fifth wheel camper and became snowbirds. They enjoyed traveling to Arizona in the winters, often boondocking with friends. Eventually, the couple purchased a park model in Florence. There they enjoyed playing cards and participating in many other activities with their friends and neighbors in the park. When traveling got to be too much, they moved to their current home in Seibert. The couple was faithful cheerleaders to the Hi-Plains Patriots teams as they followed their football, volleyball and basketball games. They even made a few trips to state championships to support the teams. In September 2020, due to Fern’s declining health as a result of Parkinson’s, the couple went to Aspen Leaf in Stratton. After 2 months of living there and Covid-19 restrictions making family visits impossible, they returned to their home in Seibert. It was here that Fern lived out her final days. She passed away peacefully with family at her side on March 10, 2021. Through all the moves that the couple made in life there was one constant and that was a piano. When they moved to spending their winters in their fifth wheel, Fern purchased a portable keyboard to take with her. When they went to Aspen Leaf, the keyboard made that trip, too. Her kids and grandkids knew the sound of Grandma at the piano if they stopped in unannounced. Fern was so very proud of her grandkids. During the last few weeks of her life, more than once she would tear up and say how blessed she was to have such successful grandkids. She would brag on the fact that so many of them were Valedictorians or Salutatorians of their class and that several entered the medical field of employment. Fern is preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Marie Pickard; her siblings Harold (Rose) Pickard, Louis (Velva) Pickard, Kenneth (JoAnn) Pickard, Velma (Ralph) Hubbell, and Leona Edmunds; her father and mother-in-law Francis and Hazel McCaffrey; brothers-in-law Francis “Junior” (Neva) McCaffrey, Darrell (Pauline) McCaffrey, Kenneth McCaffrey and Bob McCaffrey; and granddaughter Megan McCaffrey. She leaves behind her loving husband of 63 years, children and grand children. The family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to Laura Bancroft for being such a faithful and kind caregiver and friend to Fern through the end of her illness. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Community Ambulance Service or Caring Hands Hospice.
