Virginia died at her home in Winterhaven, Fla. on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, at the age of 92. Born Virginia Marie Koontz on June 18,1922, to parents Ray and Marie Koontz in Ames. Middle child of three between brother Ray J. Koontz and sister Phyllis Koontz Cottrill. Both have preceded her in death. Ray resided in Des Moines and Phyllis in Ames. Educated at St. Cecilia Catholic School in Ames and Cathedral High School in Omaha, Neb. She met and married Ray D. Leonard in Omaha in 1942. Ray was a P51 Mustang pilot, and was killed in WWII in 1945, however, he left her with two sons, R. Douglas Leonard, Jr. now of Winterhaven, Fla., and Terry J. Leonard of Charlotte, NC. Virginia married a second time in 1951 to Fred J. Schierholz, of Boone. Fred’s son Freddie became Virginia’s third son. That same year, the family moved to Orion, Ill. There Virginia served as VP and then Pres. of the PTA for several terms while the boys attended school. She worked as a teller and proof operator at the local bank and later as bookkeeper for several auto dealerships. Virginia was a member of Mary Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Orion, Ill., played organ and sang in the church choir for many years. Virginia’s sons gave her 16 grandchildren which now account for many great-grandchildren.
