Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Aug 30 at 11 a.m., at the Salem Mennonite (South) Church of rural Freeman. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday at Walter Funeral Home in Freeman with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. Virginia (Ortman) Kaufman was born to William and Anna (Goering) Ortman on January 6, 1941 on their farm near Freeman. She was the second youngest in the family, with three brothers. Virginia lived all of her life in the Freeman community, attending Hillside District #92 country school, Freeman Academy and Freeman Junior College. As a teenager, she was baptized and became a member of the Salem-Zion Mennonite (North) Church, and later served as director of the junior choir. On August 18, 1961, she married Gene Kaufman in a double wedding ceremony with her brother, Marlo Ortman, and Mavis Preheim. After her marriage she transferred her membership to the Salem Mennonite (South) Church, where she remained an active member until her passing. Mom and Dad spent the first two years of marriage in Mount Vernon, SD, where Dad was the instrumental music instructor while Mom finished her degree in Elementary Education at Dakota Wesleyan university. Following this, they served a two-year term of Mennonite Voluntary Service at King’s View Hospital in Reedley, California - two of the years they would remember most fondly. upon their return from California, Dad and Mom taught instrumental music and third grade, respectively, for one year in Viborg, SD, after which they moved onto their present farm about 15 miles east of Freeman. Mom and Dad spent roughly 50 years farming together. Mom found great satisfaction in being a full partner in the farming operation, running the farrowing barn of their hog operation and doing the bulk of the grain hauling and trucking, among many other things. She was also an excellent gardener, producing a bountiful harvest which was freely shared with friends and family, and an expert canner, baker and hostess. As a member of the Freeman Academy Auxiliary, she coordinated meal serving for numerous large events for several years. Mom’s most cherished hobby was sewing. She sewed most of the clothing for her children, as well as doll clothes, comforters, quilts and relief kit bags for Mennonite Central Committee and years of costumes for local theater productions. in the latter half of her life, she became a skilled wedding alterer, and altered or sewed hundreds of wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses and prom gowns. Mom was a tireless volunteer who served on many church committees over the years, as well as at the Et Cetera Shoppe and on the FA Auxiliary. She loved traveling with Dad and throughout their marriage they enjoyed trips to Europe, Thailand and Nepal, Ukraine, Bosnia, Mexico, and Panama, to name a few locations. Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996 and had a second occurrence in 2000. She won her battle with the disease and subsequently became an advocate and support for other local women fighting it. Mom and Dad celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2011. She passed away peacefully in their home on August 25, 2014, three years and one week later, after a nine-month struggle with failing lungs and heart. Cherishing her memory are her husband, Gene, her three children, Kris, husband Brad Carlson and children, Ben, Polly and Annie; Kenton, wife Holly and daughters Kate and Grace; and Karin, husband John Wall and children, Abram and Mabel; as well as her brothers, and brothers-and-sisters-in-law, Arlan and Ellen Ortman, Marlo and Mavis Ortman, Orville and Janelle Ortman, Duane and Marie Kaufman, Norman and LeAnne Gross, and Loren and Judy Kaufman, and a host of relatives and friends. Mom’s loving devotion to Dad, her children and grandchildren, her farm and home were unwavering. Her quiet service to others will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
