Born Feb. 11, 1919, in Thurmont, Md., she was the daughter of the late J. Clyde and Luella M. (Eyler) Shaver. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John Austin (Jack) Harshman, on June 3, 2000. They were married Nov. 9, 1946. She was a graduate of Smithsburg High School and Hood College. She was employed by the Washington County Board of Education for 29 years as a home economics teacher at both Hagerstown High School and Smithsburg High School. She coordinated the Migrant Education Program in the Smithsburg area from 1969 to 1981, and owned a baking/catering business for 10 years. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Chewsville, Md., for more than 50 years, having served as choir director, Sunday school teacher and a member of the women's organization. She was a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, serving as district representative of the Smithsburg area, a member of the Church Women's United and a member of the Smithsburg Historical Society. She is survived by sons, Kent A. and wife, Cindy (Dick), Harshman of Palmyra, Pa., and Lynn A. and wife, Patricia (Johnson), Harshman of Middletown, Md.; and grandchildren, Kristi, Kayla, Scott, Kristen and Kelsi. Services will be held Saturday, March 3, at 10 a.m. at Bethel United Methodist Church, Chewsville, with the Revs. Bill Warehime, John W. Schildt and David Andrews officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 37, Chewsville, MD 21721, or to the Virginia Shaver Harshman Scholarship Fund at Hood College, 401 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21701.
