Read More	Vivian Valenta, 9, Playing in Shelled Corn Bin, Smothers Tragedy Strikes at Thomas Valenta Family, Prominent in Voorhies Community CHILD BURIED UNDER GRAIN; SISTER SAVED Tragedy struck the Thomas Valenta family, well known farmers two and one-half miles northwest of Voorhies, about 4:30 Tuesday afternoon when the 9-year old daughter Vivian, was smothered in a bin of shelled corn on the Valenta farm. Vivian and sister Dorothy, 14 were playing in the bin when their father and Adolph Vogt, employed on the Valenta farm, began filling a truck in the driveway below with corn from the bin. The men did not know the girls were in the bin, and the girls apparently did not know what was going on below and did not sense danger. As the corn was released from the chute, Vivian was quickly covered and remained buried under one or two feet of corn while Dorothy screamed for help. Dorothy herself was buried up to her neck. Neither Mr. Valenta nor Vogt heard Dorothy due to the noise made by the corn pouring from the chute against a scoop shovel held by Vogt. Mrs. Valenta heard Dorothy’s cries and ran from the house to the granary but was too late to save Vivian. When the father learned of the situation the chute was opened wide, and the boards knocked from the side of the bin in an effort to empty it quickly. Vivian was dead when a physician from Hudson arrived. The doctor before leaving his office phoned the Waterloo fire department to bring an inhaler. Firemen rushed it to the Valenta home and attempted to administer oxygen but were too late. Dorothy, who experienced an extremely close call from a similar death, apparently suffered no serious effects from the experience. Vivian was born September 15, 1930 on the farm on which the tragedy occurred and was a fifth-grade pupil in the Voorhies school last year. Recently she had had her first communion at the Blessing Catholic church. The grief-stricken parents have the whole-hearted sympathy of scores of friends over a wide area in Tama, county as well as Black Hawk, as they are former residents of our county. Mrs. Valenta is the former Bertha Valenta. Surviving with the parents and sister Dorothy are the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kopriva, of Traer, and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Valenta, of Vining. Funeral services were held Thursday morning, attended by large crowds— at the home at 8:30, conducted by Rev. Father John Richards, of Blessing church, and at 10:15 at St. Vaclav church in Carroll township, where the service was in charge of the Rev. Father Thomas Vopatek of Clutier. Casket bearers were Edward Dufek, Russell Clingan, Edward Babinat, Leonard Mumm, Richard Mumm and Donald Jensen, all of the Voorhies community. Burial was at St. Vaclav cemetery.
