"Vivian always wanted to go bye-bye and she would always run when she heard the car starting." said Mrs. J.W. Apted 115th Street and 32nd Avenue Northeast; as she tried to think why death had to take her little Vivian, only girl in a family of six children. She was killed when Mr. Apted backed his automobile as he was about to start for work yesterday morning. Mrs. Apted had dressed the little girl, who insisted on getting up, and had given Vivian and Mr. Apted their breakfasts. The mother had started to make the morning meal for herself and her sons when the accident happened. The little girl, 18 months old, had lived twenty minutes while her parents and one of her brothers frantically drove five miles with her. She died just as a physician was found. "I had trouble starting the car," said the father. "It took perhaps a minute. When the engine began to run I looked around out the side of the car, but saw no one behind it." Mr. Apted backed the car out of an open shed which faces the back porch. He had moved the car alongside the porch and was facing the road when he caught sight of his son Roy, 5 years old, standing on the steps. "As soon as I saw Roy's face I knew that something terrible had happened." Mr. Apted recalled. Roy started to cry as his father looked at him. The little boy said: "Oh daddy you have run over Vivian." Then the father looked toward the shed, and on the ground he saw his little girl unconscious. Mrs. Apted came running from the house at Roy's words. The father leaped from the car and both parents hurried to Vivian. They could see no mark on her except a slight bruise on one cheek. Race to Save Life One of the boys, Victor, 21 years old, ran his own car out of the shed and Mr. and Mrs. Apted took Vivian in that machine while Victor drove rapidly for town. The Apteds live three miles beyond the city limits, between Bothell Way and the old Bothell Road. They stopped at the drugstore of Mr. Charles T. Cutter, 4205 University Way, as he was opening his place for the day. The baby was dead when Dr. C.W. Davis, a retired physician of 4147 Brooklyn Ave., arrived 5 minutes later. Vivian was known in the neighborhood as the life of the Apted family. "She was always up in the morning when I had my breakfast." Mr. Apted remembered. "But she had never followed me out of the house before so early in the morning." Published in The Seattle Daily Times August 21 1927. Funeral for Child Auto Victim Today* Vivian Sarah Apted, the 18-months-old child who was run down and killed Saturday morning as her father, J.W. Apted, backed his automobile from his garage, was to be buried in Washelli Cemetery this afternoon after funeral services in the Lake City Church at 3 o'clock. The little girl toddled out to kiss her father when he left for work Saturday morning and he, not knowing the child to be near, backed the car over her. She was killed almost instantly. Published in The Seattle Daily Times August 22 1927. Interment, August 22, 1927. NOTE: Vivian's year of death differs from her Headstone. She died in August of 1927.
